The Iowa Cornets
The WNBA opens play this weekend and former University of Iowa player Tangela Smith will be in uniform for the San Antonio Silver Stars. It was here in Iowa, 34 years ago, when women’s professional basketball was born. Iowa Public Radio’s Rick Fredericksen has this look back at the charter team, in this Iowa Archives special.
On January 13, 1980 Molly Bolin set a new single game scoring record of 54 points in a televised game of Iowa Cornets vs Minnesota Fillies of the first Women's Pro Basketball League, the WBL. This video chronicles the achievement.
